Other birds lay eggs only occasionally, so why the difference with chickens? Is there a difference between domesticated chickens and wild chickens in their egg laying habits?

Why do chickens lay eggs so regularly

Most birds have a certain instinct which allows them to lay an entire clutch of eggs, & if that first clutch is attacked by predators, they lay an entire new clutch of eggs.

This instinct to lay new eggs if the old ones r killed, eaten, etc. has been exagerated in chickens through selective breeding. Wild chickens (jungle fowl actually) do NOT lay eggs the way a domestic chicken does. In fact, not all domestic chickens lay eggs every day. It is a trait bred into certain breeds.

Hope that it.

Thousands of years of selective breeding.

Why do chickens lay eggs so regularly

Domestic chickens have had the broody instinct bred right out of them so they continue to lay instead of hatching a clutch of eggs.

Found this. if u read both, it makes sense.

Why Chickens Leave the Nest
All chickens lay eggs in a series - never more than one per day. If the eggs r not collected, & a sufficient number of eggs r allowed to remain in the nest, the hen may stop laying eggs & start brooding. When the hen leaves the nest after laying an egg, it cools which suspends the development of the embryo inside. If the ambient temperature remains between 45F & 65F, the embryos will remain viable for as long as two weeks. When the hen becomes broody & sits on her eggs for three weeks, all of the eggs will hatch at about the same time. This is why it is important for the hen to leave the nest after laying.

Breaking Broodies
When we remove the eggs, the hen supposes: ''There r not yet enough,'' & continues to lay. The hens of some breeds will get broody anyway after some time. This condition can be cured by placing the hen in a ''broody pen''. This is a small cage, hung in the hen house. The cooling of the bottom, the swinging movements, & the lack of eggs to sit on r said to cure this condition. The broodiness trait has been removed from most commercial laying breeds through selection. The modern laying hen has delegated her responsibility of hatching, raising, & educating chicks to humans. In nature, the poor creatures would soon become extinct.
